Every year since World War II, the president of the United States has given March this designation, and this year is no different. The month celebrates the Red Cross’s mission to help communities around the country and encourages people to summon their inner hero and save lives.
For those in the Casey, Illinois area wishing to donate blood during this month, they should visit the Community Blood Services of Illinois website for more information on how to donate, what’s involved in blood donation, and where to go. There are upcoming blood drives near Casey on Saturday, March 19th in Humboldt. For those in the Charleston area, there are blood drives on Thursday, March 24th and Friday, March 25th. The closest blood donation center is in Mattoon in Cross County Mall. You and your organization or business could even host a blood drive if there are none in your immediate area.
Just one blood donation session can save up to three lives! The whole process of blood donation usually only takes about an hour, with the drawing of blood taking 8 to 10 minutes. Every two seconds in the United States, someone needs blood, with the most needed blood type being type O. However, all blood types are needed, so those with type A, B, etc., are still strongly encouraged to donate. During winter weather conditions, blood is especially needed. The holiday season is when blood donation is at an all-time low. Yet the need for blood never fluctuates; it’s steady all year long.
Just because March is Red Cross Month doesn’t mean you have to restrict your blood donation to this time of year. People need blood January through December, so add donating blood to your goals for 2016!
