The local funeral home in Casey covered all of the costs for the food to honor these special individuals. Niemerg’s Steakhouse of Effingham provided their catering services, with a menu that included fried chicken, baked ham, mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, corn, cole slaw, noodles, and rolls. Dessert included two types of cakes and two types of pies.
Markwell Funeral Home partnered with Greenwell Funeral Home to sponsor the event. The dinner was free for all veterans and they were encouraged to bring a guest with them.
In order to advertise the event, Markwell sent out postcards to members of the local VFW and American Legion. Overall, the turnout was wonderful. Nearly 115 people were served at the dinner. Veterans got to socialize with each other and make new connections. It was a great way to observe the holiday and show our appreciation for men and women in the military.
The Casey VFW had a lot of events going on during Veterans Day Week, including a Veterans Banquet held on Saturday, November 7. This particular event included a silent auction, a live auction, and bucket raffles. All of the proceeds from the banquet went toward veterans in the community.
Markwell Funeral Home enjoyed honoring the men and women who have protected our country and hopes to participate in a similar event next year.
