Up-cycling Idea to Commemorate Loved Ones

There are many challenges, both emotional and physical, when dealing with the death of a loved one. Emotional ones include adjusting to life without someone who’s always been there for you, reaching for the phone only to realize that there’s no one on the other line.

One of the physical challenges includes cleaning up the deceased’s house and figuring out what to do with their belongings, often facing memories and sadness in the process.

It’s important to channel your energy into positive activities during this difficult period. Here’s a project that can help give the loved one’s items second life and help the survivors get through their emotional grief. Re-purpose your loved one’s favorite shirt and turn it into a commemorative pillow.

What you need:

  1. A loved one’s shirt
  2. A pillow (you can get them at Michael’s for under $10).
  3. Scissors
  4. Pins
  5. Sewing machine (or sewing skills)
  6. You can also include a tag like in the photo (It says: “This is a shirt I used to wear. And when you hold it, I’ll be there. Love, Dad XOXO.)

Directions on how to create this commemorative pillow are here.

These make great gift ideas for relatives and can be a way to keep a piece of your loved one alive. The best part is that they’re huggable, so if you’re especially missing a loved one, you can embrace the pillow and feel the sensation of hugging your friend or relative once again. This can be especially beneficial to young children who may miss the deceased and not fully understand the concept of death.
