Each third Tuesday of the month, Senior Education Ministries, Inc. holds the Dine with a Doc program. This event encourages local seniors to openly discuss concerns about their health while enjoying a complimentary lunch. The most recent one was held at the Casey Senior Social Center on SW 2nd Street from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesday, September 20, 2016.
Registered dietician Michele Smith, from Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center, spoke about healthy eating, how to manage your weight, and answered any questions that came up during the discussion. The seniors enjoyed playing a game involving naming a fruit or vegetable for each letter of the alphabet.
Twenty-seven senior citizens came out for this Dine with a Doc event, and a hearty lunch of salad, potato soup, a roll, and banana cake was provided by Markwell Funeral Home and served by staff members. Plus, infomercials from Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center, Heritage Woods, Community Care Systems, and Whispering Oaks Senior Living were shown.
Markwell’s preneed consultant Sandi Huelskamp spoke about preneed funeral arrangements and also how to apply veteran and survivor benefits to a plan. In addition to the talk, Sandi gave away $20 cash to three winners: Carol Wilson, Sandy Glidewell, and Cliff Clouser.
Other prizes at the event included a metal decorative pumpkin provided by Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center (winner June Ellington), a basket with snacks provided by Heritage Woods (winner David King), a cup with a $10 gift card to McDonald’s from Markwell Funeral Home (winner Linda Cutright), a metal coffee cup courtesy of Community Care systems (winner Carol Wilson), a bag of apples provided by Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center (winner Gail Graham), and two gift cards from Casey Senior Social Center (winners Bonnie McCash and Julie Wilson).
Thank you to everyone who came out for this event and to everyone who helped make it a success. See you at the next one!
