Every third Tuesday of the month, Senior Education Ministries, Inc. hosts the Dine with a Doc program, an opportunity for area senior citizens to openly discuss health concerns over complimentary lunch. Markwell Funeral Home sponsors these events, with the most recent one taking place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesday, December 20 at the Casey Senior Social Center on SW 2nd Street.
Following the Pledge of Allegiance, the program recognized the veterans in attendance before leading a prayer. Then, palliative care nurse practitioner Amy Ladd served as the program’s medical expert, speaking about advanced care planning during difficult health situations. For lunch, nearly 25 seniors enjoyed fried chicken, baked macaroni and cheese, green beans, and chocolate chiffon pudding, courtesy of Markwell Funeral Home. Lunch was served by Markwell office administrator Dee Partlow, licensed funeral director and embalmer Millie Malone, and the Senior Education Ministries, Inc. and Senior Center staff.
The program included infomercials from area businesses and a drawing. The winners included: Liz Redman and Carl Southard (Senior Social Center gift cards), Rosemary Smith (a holiday jar filled with candy from Markwell Funeral Home), June McCullough (Markwell Funeral Home coffee mug and hand towel), June Ellington (Health Alliance bag with water bottle and other items), Carol Wilson (cup with Christmas door knob hanger from Community Care Systems), Gene Russell (coffee cup with candy from Carle Hospital), Kay Hutchins (popcorn from Addis Home Care), and Ben Hammond (Christmas cookies from Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center).
Thank you to everyone who came out for December’s Dine with a Doc program. The next program will be January 17 with the theme “Spill the Beans with a Tax Preparer”. See you then!
