Candy Canes on Main Event Drew Biggest Crowd in 20 Years

Markwell Funeral Home was honored to sponsor an old-fashioned Christmas tree contest on Saturday, December 3
from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., as part of the Candy Canes on Main event in Downtown Casey. The holiday event ended up drawing the largest crowd the city has seen in nearly 20 years!fullsizer

The Christmas tree contest took place on the lot east of Schoff Law Office, located on 11 East Main Street. In all, 25 trees entered the contest, decorated by businesses, community/school groups, and other organizations (however, businesses were not eligible for the prizes).

First prize of $50 went to Mrs. Smock and Mrs. Hacker’s classes at Monroe Elementary; they decorated their tree with handmade ornaments, popcorn berries, and bird and deer feeders. Second prize of $25 went to Tiffany Easton and her family, while third prize of $25 went to Lisa Seaton and her family. At the end of the day on Saturday, everyone picked up their tree and took them home or to their respective businesses to enjoy. The prizes came courtesy of the Casey Chamber of Commerce. Judging took place at 12 p.m.

In addition to the Christmas tree contest, Markwell Funeral Home also provided cookies to all the businesses that participated in the Candy Canes on Main event in Casey. The local funeral home delivered the cookies on Friday to the businesses, and when a customer would make a purchase at a respective business, they’d receive a free cookie with wrapping that read, “Thank you for shopping local! Courtesy of Markwell Funeral Home.” Markwell sponsored cookies and hot chocolate at the Casey Township Library on Saturday morning, too. markwell-cookies
