5 Fun Facts about the Casey Popcorn Festival

During the same weekend as the Illinois State Horseshoe Tournament, the annual Casey Illinois Popcorn Festival took place at Casey Fairview Park Saturday September 5 through Monday September 7.

Markwell Funeral Home office manager, Dee Partlow and her husband Marshall represented the local funeral home at the festival by volunteering two hours of their time popping and serving popcorn to festival-goers from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday, September 5.

Each year, the funeral home is a sponsor of the festival, which has been going on for more than 25 years. This special event is unique to the area and boasts some fun facts. Here are 5.

1. When the festival started in 1987, it was intended to be a family-friendly event, and because of this, it’s alcohol-free.

2. The festival provides 1,500 pounds of popcorn to festival-goers.

3. The official snack food of the state of Illinois is popcorn (with Illinois towns like Casey and Manito devoting entire festivals to it, how could it not be?).

4. In fact, back in 2003, the Chicago Tribune covered popcorn production in the state, highlighting Casey’s popcorn festival.

5. However, Ohio and Indiana could rival Illinois with their popcorn festivals (even if their official state snack foods are buckeyes and sugar cream pie, respectively). There are similar events in Marion, Ohio; Valparaiso, Indiana; and Dayton, Ohio.

Markwell Funeral Home loved being a part of this event and was honored to have Dee there on our behalf. We hope to see everyone again at the event next year!
